Box setting The Village at the mo. Saved it up on Sky + then worried I would never get round to it, then started it five nights ago and have watched it every night since. Last one tonight.
It wants to be the British Heimat and tell the tale of Britain and the changes wrought over the century through the prism of a rural village. It’s going to 42 episodes at 6 a year I understand, so long as the audience holds.
This first series is a brilliant start. Not as subtle as Heimat, but it’s BBC1 so it had got to maintain an audience thus it’s necessarily more dramatic, but beautifully done, stunning to watch, exciting, properly depressing, so well acted.
Glad I caught it. I hope it can sustain. Ambition should be vaunting. It should be encouraged. It should prevail.
